VicRoads and Vic police - statewide switchboard and emergency lighting maintenance

Emergency lighting

Under Australian Standards 2293.2 Australian Businesses are obliged to conduct tests of their emergency and exit lighting systems every 6 months.

In the event of a fire or natural disaster, where power supply might be cut, emergency lighting provides basic lighting. These are often located above stairs or within closed rooms such as toilets to provide enough light for people to safely move through and leave an area.

Exit lighting is typically located above doorways and through hallways to highlight the safest and fastest routes to escape from a building.

Exit lighting - 2 main types

There are two main types of exit lights in buildings:

  • Maintained Exit lighting
    • Stays on all the time
    • May have two sets of bulbs inside them, one which operates on the regular building power, and a smaller low voltage bulb that is powered by a battery and which only comes on when there is a power outage
    • An exit light that appears to be working when the power is on, may have a burned out low voltage bulb or flat battery, which means that it won't work when it actually needs to
  • Non-maintained exit lighting
    • Comes on only if power is cut
    • Are permanently connected to an electrical supply that constantly charges the battery
    • If the power fails, a circuit is triggered and the battery powers a low-voltage bulb to light the area
    • If the battery does not hold its charge, it can quickly become dim
    • If the bulb is burned out, the light will not come on at all

Statewide testing and maintenance of emergency lights

We currently perform bi-annual, statewide testing and maintenance of emergency lights for VicRoads depots and Victoria Police stations.

We continuously monitor the performance of the batteries and globes to ensure these lighting systems will operate properly during the unfortunate events when they're needed most.

With the introduction of LED lighting systems, we are now able to cut the costs of globe maintenance and reduce energy consumption. If you'd like to enquire about emergency light testing or LED emergency systems, don't hesitate to get in touch with us today.

VicRoads office fitout

"They were working fast, but certainly safety wasn't compromised at all. Cabled gave me confidence. They were smart, they had specific ideas about how they would get the job done. Their ideas made sense, and as I got working with Alain, while he was coming down here and doing a lot of preparation work, I realised I had made a good choice, choosing CABLED, and today has been clockwork"
