Alma Park pavilion upgrade - low voltage distribution

Project brief (extract from the City of Port Phillip website)

As part of the City of Port Phillip's commitment to redeveloping and maintaining sporting and recreation facilities, council upgraded the pavilion in Alma Park to create a multi-functional space for sports clubs and community groups. The upgraded pavilion accommodates a wide range of current and emerging users and improves the public toilets available to the wider community and visitors to Alma Park.

The upgraded pavilion incorporates the following design elements:

  • Exterior design which complements the natural environment
  • Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD) features such as solar panels, recyclable materials, natural ventilation, natural light and rainwater tanks
  • Wider building layout in order to comply with Football Federation Victoria building requirements

Our solution

Over a 4 month period, Cabled upgraded the park's electrical infrastructure to accommodate the new building. This included:

  • 50mts of new and upgraded underground power cabling to feed existing park buildings and sports lighting systems
  • 250 mts of new underground cabling to feed the new pavilions
  • New metering and main switchboard kiosks to regulate power supply for the Alma Park site and buildings
  • The completion of electrical distribution systems including light and power for the new buildings

Specialist skills/equipment

To complete this project in the most efficient and safe way possible whilst adhering to the special considerations, we used:
  • A 2T Excavator for trenching
  • A directional bore for environmentally friendly installation of underground cabling
  • A 3T winch for drawing mains cabling through underground pipes

Special considerations

Alma park is a popular destination for young families in the St Kilda area. Safety of all workers and the general public around the construction site was our primary concern. With all of the machinery required, extensive planning and preparation was necessary to ensure that work areas were well and truly barricaded and signed at all times as required.

Procedures and safe work methods were developed and closely monitored during the works and as a result, the job went smoothly.

"They were working fast, but certainly safety wasn't compromised at all. Cabled gave me confidence. They were smart, they had specific ideas about how they would get the job done. Their ideas made sense, and as I got working with Alain, while he was coming down here and doing a lot of preparation work, I realised I had made a good choice, choosing CABLED, and today has been clockwork"
